Toneelgroep Maastricht plays Schuld

Toneelgroep Maastricht will perform the play Schuld in Dutch theaters from Oct. 6 through Nov. 26, 2022. Schuld tells the story of a Jezidic woman who has fled to the Netherlands after being held as a slave by IS. In the Netherlands, she is confronted by her rapist in the supermarket. This forces her to act. The various characters are played by a four-member, rock-solid ensemble of actresses. In a fiery text by Timen Jan Veenstra and with the exciting live music of multi-talented Sam Gysel, Jouman Fattal makes his debut as director with Toneelgroep Maastricht.

"The Yezidis are an often forgotten people from the Middle East who have been the biggest victims of IS since 2014 and large numbers of whom also live here in the Netherlands. We know the stories of Syrians who radicalize, they get plenty of attention, but we never really talk about what they do. While the victims who managed to flee the atrocities there are also walking around here in the Netherlands and living among us. Their stories are not or hardly ever told."

Schuld is a mix of true stories and the imagination of the creators. The colorful ensemble takes the viewer into a stifling and confrontational narrative about war, freedom and what guilt means in a world that does not admit guilt.

In the setting of Schuld, you will soon see a number of carpets made in a weaving workshop in Khanke in northern Iraq. A special collaboration between scenographer Sarah Nixon and six Yezidi women working in the weaving workshop. The weaving workshop was established by Free Yezidi Crafts & Enterprise (part of The Free Yezidi Foundation).

The performance will be performed in Dutch.
