From Displacement to Determination: Khalida’s Inspiring Story
Khalida Haji, 27, originally from Tel Azeer village in Sinjar, now calls Khanke home with her family of 17. Displacement disrupted her education, but she remains hopeful of completing it one day. Facing hardship, Khalida longs for the past while striving to stay resilient amid an uncertain future.
“Displacement made us forget our happy memories from the past, and now we only have sad memories of Sinjar,”
she reflects, recalling the struggle for basic necessities like food and water during her family’s flight from ISIS.
In Khanke, Khalida stays active by engaging with various NGO programs. She loves FYF’s artisan training program, which has made her financially independent through the sale of handmade items like the Chonky Animals product line. Her passion and hard work fuel her days, bringing her joy and a sense of purpose.
“Education and job opportunities are our priorities for now,”
Khalida says, emphasizing her family’s focus on building a stable future. With her family’s support, especially her mother’s encouragement, she dreams of a stable job and educational opportunities through FYF’s assistance.
Khalida also notes the profound change in the role of Yezidi women post-displacement. Many, including herself, have stepped up to become providers and active community members, driven by the loss of male relatives. Inspired by their resilience and independence, Khalida strives to build a better future for herself and her community.
