From Impoverishment to Empowerment

Shaima Suliman is a café worker at FYF’s Sugar is Sweet bakery and café. She sheds light on Yezidi women’s journey from impoverishment to empowerment in the aftermath of the 2014 Yezidi Genocide:

“As a Yezidi woman, I find it very important to develop myself and gain new skills through different courses that FYF offers. I participated in several courses at FYF’s Enterprise and Training Center (ETC), and they played a vital role in enhancing my knowledge and developing my skills. I was provided with the opportunity to attend a bakery course at the ETC, which then led to me securing a job at FYF’s Sugar is Sweet bakery and café. As a café worker, I feel comfortable and supported in my work environment.

I personally believe that Yezidi women have progressed a lot since the genocide, as many of them were previously illiterate and impoverished. Yezidi women have gone through so much adversity, yet they still have worked hard to develop themselves and support their community.”
