By the end of June 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) had conquered over a third of Iraq, Including Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, their territory also encircled the district of Sinjar, home to most of the world’s Yezidi people.
On August 19, 2014, The Free Yezidi Foundation (FYF), registered in the Netherlands, immediately started supporting the Yezidi community in Iraq in the fight for humanitarian recovery and comprehensive justice and accountability.
