In Yezidi displaced persons camps, most children have never had a birthday party. There are no balloons, no candles to blow out, no songs sung for them. For many children, the idea of being celebrated, of having a day that is truly their own, feels almost impossible.
This holiday season, you can change that.
A Childhood on Pause
A Childhood on Pause
Many Yezidi children in IDP camps grow up without the simple joys that every child deserves. Many have never celebrated a birthday — no candles, no balloons, no cake. Their childhood is often interrupted by displacement and uncertainty, yet they continue to find small ways to create, imagine, and hold onto moments of innocence.
THE SOLUTION
The 'Sugar is Sweet' Cafe
Sponsor a birthday celebration at FYF’s Sugar is Sweet Café for a displaced Yezidi child and his or her loved ones. A birthday party isn’t just about sweets and decorations – it’s about giving children back a piece of childhood that conflict and displacement have taken away.
Sugar is Sweet Café, run by Yezidi women, brings joy back to children while supporting local women who bake the cakes and organize the celebrations.
Each birthday is lovingly prepared by Yezidi women, every cake baked, ribbon tied, and gift made by hand.
