Who We Are

The Free Yezidi Foundation (FYF) supports the Yezidi community in the aftermath of the 2014 Yezidi Genocide. FYF promotes the rights and well-being of Yezidis in Iraq and the diaspora, with an emphasis on women’s empowerment, the pursuit of justice, and helping the community rebuild through trauma treatment, education, training, and economic development.

FYF is virtually headquartered in the Netherlands and the United States, with its operational base in Duhok, Iraq. The Foundation is particularly engaged in service provision for religious and ethnic minorities (REM) in Iraq, with an emphasis on women, youth, and survivors of mass atrocities from the Yezidi and other REM communities.

Background

FYF provides humanitarian services for Yezidi survivors and for Yezidi women and children, with a special focus on trauma recovery and psychological services, economic empowerment, community reintegration, and education. The Free Yezidi Foundation pursues justice and accountability on behalf of Yezidis affected by ISIS crimes. FYF advances international awareness of the plight of the Yezidis and how to ethically address their concerns, playing an important role in promoting better and broader humanitarian and human rights support to the Yezidis, including the rights of women and girls within the Yezidis community.

Job Summary

As part of the Free Yezidi Foundation’s protection team, under the supervision of FYF’s Protection Manager and oversight of FYF’s Programs Director, the Psychologist will conduct intake assessments and provide internal and external referrals, individual and group therapy sessions, and peer support sessions. The FYF Duty Station will be Khanek, with travel to other FYF offices, This is a full-time job.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform several functions:

  • Report to the Protection Manager.
  • Conduct intake assessments according to international standards, using techniques that can track the progress of clients’ well-being.
  • Consult with FYF case managers on additional support needed to ensure the well-being of clients.
  • Provide individual trauma-focused cognitive-behavior therapy and schema therapy sessions to clients.
  • Provide group therapy sessions (narrative exposure therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy) and peer support sessions to encourage community engagement and support.
  • In extreme cases, refer survivors in need of psychiatric care to trusted external psychiatrists.
  • Utilize case data management tools and systems to ethically record information about clients accessing services, in line with the principle of confidentiality, and utilize aggregate information to improve service delivery.
  • Ensure safe and confidential storage of case-related data and files.
  • Identify available services and coordinate internal referrals based on the wishes and consent of the clients in coordination with the protection officers. 
  • Upskill and train Harikara.
  • Complete reports as assigned by the Protection Manager.
  • Work with the Protection Manager to develop and maintain work plans to achieve targets and indicators. 
  • Attend and contribute to regular case review meetings with the entire protection team.
  • Attend FYF meetings and trainings as needed and as requested by the Protection Manager.
  • Perform and assist in other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in psychology.
  • Past experience working with survivors of genocide and conflict-related sexual violence.

The most essential qualities for this position include compassion, cultural sensitivity, ability to navigate complex social dynamics, integrity, emotional strength, ability to work as part of a team, and respect for the vulnerable and suffering.

Upon Joining FYF

FYF has non-disclosure and liability waiver clauses in the contract for all employers upon joining the team. All paperwork and related documents will be managed between the time that the job offer is sent and the incumbent begins work, including agreeing to the FYF code of conduct.
