Remembering the Victims of Kocho Massacre
On this day nine years ago, Kocho, a Yezidi village in south Sinjar that was placed under siege for 12 terror-stricken days, fell victim to some of ISIS’ most horrific atrocities. Armed militants rounded up and massacred the village’s men and older women. The remaining women and children were enslaved; subjected to sexual slavery or forcibly recruited as child soldiers. The entire Kocho community was forcibly displaced.
Today, we remember and honor those whose lives were lost and those who survived yet continue to face protracted displacement, poverty, and severe trauma.
No more words without action – we call on the Iraqi government to allocate 1% of its annual budget to reconstruct Sinjar and facilitate the recovery of the entire Yezidi community, including former Kocho residents. Read more.
