FYF participates in UN meeting on gender-related killing

FYF Country Director Hewan Omer participated in a meeting held by the UN in Iraq – UNAMI – on the topic of gender-based killings in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Gender-based killing, sometimes referred to as ‘honor killing’, has been in the news recently after a series of incidents in Iraq.

FYF is a women-led organization, and women’s rights, protection, and empowerment is a primary focus of our work. Ms. Omer emphasized the critical value of full implementation of laws that protect women, and that laws and government agencies must be accessible to women and girls, and not only legislation on paper. She also stressed protecting the confidentiality of those who refer cases to authorities in order to encourage better and broader cooperation with police and legal services.
