FYF Participates in Sweden’s First Yezidi Genocide Trial

This week, FYF marked a significant step toward justice for Yezidis as Executive Director Pari Ibrahim testified in Sweden’s first trial addressing the Yezidi Genocide. The trial centers on L. Ishaq, an ISIS member charged with genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

Sweden’s efforts mark only the 10th trial globally to hold individuals accountable for the Yezidi Genocide, following similar cases in Germany and the Netherlands. These trials are critical steps in addressing the atrocities committed during ISIS’s 2014 campaign, which targeted Yezidis with mass killings, enslavement, and other inhumane crimes.

In the Courtroom
Pari Ibrahim delivered compelling testimony, staring directly at the defendant as she detailed the brutality inflicted on the Yezidi people by female ISIS members. “I told her that ISIS came to destroy the Yezidis, but they did not succeed, and they will never succeed. Our people persist, and Yezidis will make sure that perpetrators like the defendant will be held accountable for the crimes they committed against our people,” she shared after the proceedings.

While the defendant showed no remorse, the evidence presented by survivors, expert witnesses, and advocates like FYF underscores the importance of accountability for the Yezidi community’s recovery and healing.

A Global Effort for Justice
Around the world, Yezidis and their allies continue to work tirelessly to ensure that there is no safe haven for those who perpetrated genocide and other atrocities. Prosecution authorities in multiple countries are collaborating with Yezidi civil society to collect and strengthen evidence, ensuring that justice prevails, no matter how long it takes.

FYF remains steadfast in its commitment to justice for Yezidis. We extend our gratitude to the Swedish prosecution and others globally who are taking these crimes seriously. Together, we will hold the perpetrators of these horrific acts accountable.
