FYF Beneficiaries Illustrate the Power of Education
Shaima is a young Yezidi woman who lives in Khanke. Iraq. She was in 3rd grade when ISIS attacked Sinjar in 2014. As a result, she was forced to flee her homeland with her family. After resettling in a mud house in Khanke, Shaima was unable to continue her studies due to her family’s difficult living conditions, poverty, and the far distance from her home to school. A beneficiary of FYF’s education programming, Shaima highlights the impact of the programming on her wellbeing:
“I always wanted to be able to read and write because to me literacy is important for everyone, especially women and girls. I currently attend Arabic language courses at FYF’s Enterprise and Training Center to enhance my reading and writing skills. Before the classes, I always felt embarrassed that I couldn’t write my name or sign for myself when someone asked me to, but I am currently able to do both and even more thanks to FYF. I am grateful to FYF for providing me with the educational opportunity that I lost because of the Yezidi Genocide. I hope they will continue to provide more courses to empower us to learn more and develop ourselves.”
