From Adversity to Aspiration: Dalal’s Journey of Resilience and Empowerment
Dalal Muhssen, a 21-year-old Yezidi woman from Sinjar’s Kerzark village, has faced unimaginable challenges since fleeing to Kurdistan during the 2014 Genocide. Now living in Khanke IDP camp with her family, Dalal has turned her struggles into stepping stones toward a brighter future through her participation in FYF’s artisan training program.
Before joining FYF’s program, Dalal had no experience in knitting. However, through the program, she mastered various techniques and transformed her newfound skills into a thriving small business. In just a few months, she has sold handmade scarves, bags, and blouses, proudly stating,
I never imagined I could knit, let alone turn it into a business. Now, I have my own small enterprise.
Dalal also benefited from FYF’s financial literacy classes, where she learned to manage her money effectively. In just two months, she saved 300,000 IQD, a milestone that has brought pride to her family and given her confidence to dream bigger. Dalal now hopes to expand her family’s clothes shop and one day open her own beauty salon, channeling her passion for makeup artistry.
Her journey is not just about personal growth but also a reflection of the changing role of Yezidi women.
Yezidi women are now reclaiming their rights and building a future for themselves,
Dalal proudly observes. She calls for continued support to help women establish businesses and achieve financial independence. Dalal’s story exemplifies resilience, empowerment, and the transformative power of FYF’s artisan training program, offering hope for a brighter future for Yezidi women everywhere.
