English Access Program Students Explore Language, Culture, and History

This summer, 130 students from the English Access Program in Sheikhan took part in an intensive learning program filled with discovery, growth, and new experiences. In addition to their English classes, students joined educational trips that brought lessons to life outside the classroom.
They visited the Duhok National Museum, where many students saw ancient artifacts for the very first time—objects they had only read about in books until now. Another group explored some of Ninewa’s most historic sites, including the 3,000-year-old Jarwana Aqueduct, the Tomb of Prophet Nahum, and the Old Alqosh Village. These trips offered students the chance to connect with each other while experiencing the region’s cultural heritage firsthand.
Students also had the opportunity to share their progress in English. After a year and a half in the program, one student proudly described his journey during the visits, reflecting the confidence and skills he has gained.
Supported by the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil, the English Access Program equips Sheikhan’s youth with English language skills, cultural awareness, and opportunities for growth—opening doors for their future and strengthening connections within their community.
