Amnesty International Germany Publishes Landmark Report on Yezidi Genocide Trial
The case centers on Taha Al-J., who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2021 by the Oberlandesgericht Frankfurt am Main for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The publication compiles trial records, survivor perspectives, legal analysis, and contributions from civil society, creating an unprecedented record of this historic accountability effort.
“The conviction was a glimpse of hope that there is a system of law, somewhere in the world, that has the capacity and will to assert jurisdiction over these crimes.”
FYF contributed directly and significantly to the report. Executive Director Pari Ibrahim and Justice Manager Waheeda Omer provided input and expertise that informed the publication’s analysis and survivor-centered perspective. Their contributions build on FYF’s broader justice and accountability work, including convening a closed-door strategy session in New York with UNITAD and leading legal advocates to assess pathways to prosecution. In these efforts, FYF highlighted the vast scale of atrocities and stressed that accountability must address not only ISIS membership, but the full scope of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed against Yezidis.
